Meeting an 8 am departure of the Cog Wheel Train that climbs to the summit of Pikes Peak meant another early morning. We made it to the station with about 15 minutes to spare. The ride up was steep (25% grade) but spectacular. Walking around on the summit was amazing, staring down on the few clouds in an otherwise crystal clear sky. After buying our token gifts and eating a fresh made donut (yeast does strange things at 14,115 ft) we boarded the train for the decent. Riding down was just as spectacular and took about the same time as going up. We then started our trip south towards New Mexico.

On the way down I there was a mileage sign with Las Vegas 124 miles. I asked BJ if she wanted to have dinner in Vegas since she had never been. With great enthusiasm she said yes, so we made our detour and 2 hours later were eating at K-BOBs.

Let me tell you a bit about Las Vegas, New Mexico. Actually let me just skip the whole subject.

After a fine dinner we headed down the map and reached Roswell at about dark. Scanning the skies we saw only stars so we just kept driving. We pulled in to the KOA about 11:00 and were too tired to set up the tent, so we crashed in the jeep which turned out to not be without merit.
